•    5 South is comprised of 51 beds and two specialty areas that are included in the unit floor plan, the Pulmonary Care Unit and the Bone Marrow Transplant/Acute Leukemia Unit.
•    The oncology population consists of newly-diagnosed patients with leukemia or lymphoma requiring complicated chemotherapy regimens and then management of expected side effects from their treatment. 
•    Patients with solid tumors (breast, lung, prostate, brain) typically present in later stages of their disease process and require intense symptom management and medical intervention.
•    Autologous and allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation is offered for Multiple Myeloma, Leukemia, and Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Hodgkin’s disease patients.  
•    If chemotherapy is needed for a patient in the Intensive Care setting or on another unit that the patient cannot be transferred from, the staff administers the chemotherapy and provides the necessary education to the patient and staff providing care. 
•    The Pulmonary Care Unit meets the needs of patients with acute respiratory failure requiring long–term tracheostomy and patients diagnosed with acute exacerbation of COPD or asthma, pneumonia, pulmonary emboli, acute respiratory distress syndrome, sarcoidosis, and sleep apnea. 
•    The General Medicine population consists of patients admitted with multisystem issues stemming from Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Renal and Liver disease, HIV/AIDS, Sickle Cell Disease, and various infectious disease processes.  3 years plus of medical surgical experience is required.
